Biographical Information
| |
Residing in Fort Wayne,
Indiana since the 1980's, I originally came to this area to complete an
internship in Counseling Psychology. We have established satisfying lives
in this area and greatly enjoyed the formative years our children were engaged
in a variety of school activities. With my wife of 30 years, we are parents of
two daughters who have completed college degrees, and are enjoying both the opportunities and challenges of
"empty-nesting."

I enjoy spending time with
family and friends, golfing, fishing, reading, working with my hands, seasonal
sports, cooking, good quality documentaries, and music. Pictured with me (upper right) is Snipper, the family Schnauzer. The center picture was taken
in London in March, 2003. The bottom picture is in the Rocky Mountains.
Don't assume that picture implies horsemanship - I could barely walk when the
ride was done! | |

Education
History | |
| |
I have enjoyed a varied
education history and continue to enjoy learning immensely, through reading of
history, international affairs, theology, and other subjects. I attended
Ball State University obtaining my undergraduate degree in 1977 majoring in
psychology with a minor in voice. I attended Iliff and United Theological Seminaries
obtaining a Master of Divinity degree in 1981
while student-pastoring two small rural churches.
After ordination, I served several additional years in both rural and urban
parishes. I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Ball
State University in 1992 [APA approved] and was licensed in Indiana as a Psychologist in 1993,
earning my certification as a Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP) later
that same year.

Work History | |
| |
My work experience as a
psychologist has included employment
as an outpatient Staff Psychologist for a major regional hospital in addition to
my work in private practice. Serving as Director, Mental Health Counseling at a
local university I taught graduate courses, trained, and supervised counselors
for six years. I have also provided supervision and consultation
to area counseling agencies for several years. Until recently, I continued
to do numerous public presentations and training events on a variety of
spiritual and psychological subjects. Focusing primarily now upon private
practice, I hope in the coming years to write, publish, and speak on a broader
scale prior to retirement.

Spirituality
and Psychology | |
| |
My training as a
scientist and practitioner in psychology as well as my education, ordination
and prior work in parish ministry provide me a solid foundation upon which to counsel others in a
competent, caring, and ethical fashion. I resist using potentially unclear stereotypical labels
to characterize my work, though view it as a supportive ministry helping others.
I do not use therapy to proselytize and would consider it unethical to do so.
Counseling and preaching are different roles, based upon differing assumptions
and goals.
I am conversant on a variety of spiritual topics and different walks
off faith, and extend grace for those whose faith journey, lifestyle choices,
and values
may be different from mine. I do not "force" spirituality into counseling
experiences nor am I avoidant to process spiritual issues when relevant and
raised by clients (see empowering
clients here).
My task, within a context of grace and acceptance of each unique person,
is to provide accurate, objective feedback (seeing things as they are) regarding options
and choices available. I respect the right of each person
to not only make
informed choices, but their right to experience the consequences (for good or ill) of
such choices as a starting point for growth. I understand each client
lives within a larger context and system, and therefore, their personal
choices will impact others as well. I view each client as "culturally different" and therefore
unique. I believe growth is most likely to occur within an environment of
grace, acceptance, honesty, safety, and understanding.
